England is the birthplace of football and has the oldest clubs. However, not all of them are currently in the leading roles. But the Manchester teams stand out in this regard, they still maintain a dominant position. You can follow their progress on Bet365 football.
Team History
A younger club from Manchester, now called City, was founded in 1880, two years after the Newton Heath team, which later became famous under the name United.
Although City was also initially called St. Marks, then Ardwick, and received its current name only in 1894. The first success happened in the FA Cup in 1904, the team won the final with a score of 3-0. However, the championship title had to wait until 1937. Success was later overshadowed by relegation from the English top division.
A real revival began in the second half of the 60s. During this time, the 1967/1968 championship, the FA Cup in 1969, and the European Cup Winners’ Cup in 1970 were won.
However, once again, success was followed by failure. First, the team fell into the middle of the top division, then, since 1983, they began to toss between the strongest class and the second strongest league of the English championship.
Only since 2002 has Manchester City been playing in the English Premier League on a regular basis.
Development
The club’s history was turned upside down by the purchase of the team by Arab sheikhs in 2008. Large-scale cash injections began, and star players appeared. This allowed them to win the FA Cup in 2011. However, the true revolution was the arrival of coach Guardiola in 2016. An excellent coach was added to the host of stars, which allowed them to win the championship title four times in a row. The first attempt to win the Champions League happened in 2021, but the match was lost to Chelsea, and only in 2023, all the fans and players achieved their dream – the club ascended to the throne of the European winner. However, as often happened with City, after important successes there was a decline. Now the team is going through difficult times of restructuring, when many old leaders left, in particular the team’s brain Kevin de Bruyne, the defenders aged, the winner of the “Golden Ball” Rodri got injured, Foden faded and Grealish left, bought for more than 100 million, but never lived up to expectations.
City seem to confirm the rule that not everything in football can be bought with money. However, Guardiola is still at the helm, a new purchase of promising players was made and the fans hope for a return to the top.
